If you are looking for a boot that will give good protection, is cheap, and can be worn all day and not look out of place under pants, a cheap work boot can work well. Here is a picture of the type I have used for a few years now. Stanley steel toe boots, go up maybe 2 inches over the ankle (well above hightop style shoes, but maybe 2 inches shorter than race boots) they are all leather, have extra padding over the ankles and above, and lace up high enough that unlike shoes, they won't have a chance of flying off in a crash. Also with some models like the ones I have is that under jeans, or slacks, they look like they are a casual dress shoe. Not to mention, an added bonus would be the steel toes! You know when you end up in the wrong biker bar at the wrong time...

I got mine about 3 years ago for like $35 at payless. Here is a link to what looks to be the same that I have had. (I also have some joe rocket riding boots, and I am not convinced that they offer more protection than these)

Only downside is that they don't breath nearly as well as shoes, and not as well as most riding boots I imagine. Fine when riding, but thats the biggest drawback wearing them all day.

Also as far as other gear I would just keep checking ebay and craigslist and the scr classifieds to pick up a set of leather or at least textile riding pants. (And it sounds like your good as far as a jacket, gloves etc?) I have seen textile pants from $30 (even new a few times) as well as leather pants from $50ish, and some 1 peice suits on ebay go for under a $100 a couple times. At the end of last fall I started looking for a while, and eventually picked up a 2 peice leather jacket and pants for $100. Not the newest, but in good shape. Just keep your eyes open. I would strongly suggest cheap pants and boots over jeans and shoes.

Well I have been in the short on money and short on gear category, and I ended up deciding that it was best for me to get full gear that was either cheaper or used instead of all new or top of the line stuff, which would have meant waiting alot longer to get anything. So far so good
